WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 .- The 35th General Conference of the Organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) confirmed by a large majority appointment of Irina Bokova as its new general director, first woman to office after an election, which pitted the Egyptian Farouk Hosni.
According to AFP, of the 193 UNESCO member countries participating in the General Conference, 166 supported the appointment of Bokova, that from December Koichiro Matsuura will replace the Japanese head of the organization.
Bokova, 57, was elected in early September by the UNESCO Executive Committee after five rounds of secret ballot.
